Caring for your Cresent Furniture
Cresent® furniture is crafted of Cherry, Maple and Mahogany and carefully selected cherry and walnut veneers and other select hardwoods.   We hand-build each piece to exacting tolerances using a combination of time-tested construction techniques and modern technological advances. With a little care and effort, your Cresent® furniture will give your family many years of satisfaction. You can help maintain the beauty and function of your Cresent® furniture by considering the following care tips:
  • Cresent® selects the finest lumber for use in our furniture. Because no two trees are alike, each piece of Cresent® furniture will be unique and distinctive. These species have many beautiful and distinctive characteristics such as color variations, ribbon grain, mineral streaks, pin knots, cathedral grain, and pitch pockets. These inherent characteristics add to the natural beauty and unique character of each piece of Cresent® furniture.

  • All furniture will change color over time. This effect is particularly noticeable, however, in Cherry furniture with lighter stains, which will darken as the wood progresses from a light pinkish-brown to a rich red patina. This aging process is more pronounced in lighter-finished pieces, and is accelerated by exposure to ultraviolet light (such as sunlight). While Cresent® uses ultraviolet-resistant finishes to retard the darkening, the natural effects of aging cannot be completely prevented. In order to minimize the effect of this aging, we recommend that Cresent® furniture not be placed in direct sunlight. In the event that the piece must be placed in direct sunlight, be prepared for it to darken more quickly and periodically move lamps and other decorative accessories around to prevent lighter areas from forming. Occasionally turning the piece will also help even out the aging process in lighter-finished pieces. Finally, to ensure that your furniture ages evenly, Cresent® recommends that if you intend to buy multiple pieces of one finish, you purchase the pieces at the same time.

  • Do not place plastic or rubber products on Cresent® furniture, as they may adversely react with the finish. Use pads, cloth or felt to protect the surface from plastic and rubber, as well as hot dishes, bookends, and other accessories that may scratch or dent the surface.

  • We take care to dry the wood in our furniture to a moisture level that relates to the average relative humidity in most homes. Even after drying, however, wood furniture remains porous, and it will react to seasonal changes in relative humidity by shrinking or expanding as it releases or absorbs moisture from the air around it. Occasionally the results of these changes can be seen in furniture, most often as gaps in the alignment of expanding tables or drawers that stick slightly when opening or closing. These changes do not affect the structure or quality of the furniture, and will correct themselves when the humidity returns to normal. To minimize these changes, maintain your home at a temperature between 65 and 75 degrees, with a relative humidity of 35 to 40 percent. Additionally, avoid placing wood furniture near radiators, registers, fireplaces or air-conditioning units.

  • Cresent's® multistep finish is water resistant, but it is not waterproof. Use care when watering plants, and ensure that vases and flowerpots will not leak water or condensation onto your furniture. Clean up spills immediately by blotting the liquid with a soft cloth, not by wiping.

  • For regular dusting and cleaning, a dampened soft cloth works well; spray polishes are not recommended or necessary.  Spray waxes and polishes containing silicone or other similar lubricants (i.e. Pledge, Endust, Old English...etc) should not be used as the silicone could react adversely with the finish and cause permanent damage.  We recommend removing old wax from your furniture once a year. This can be done with a solution of warm water and a mild detergent, Murphy's Oil Soap.

  • Cresent® treats our wooden drawer guides with a wax solution to allow for ease of opening and closing. Over time, the wax may wear off. You may rewax the guides using ordinary paraffin wax found at most hardware stores. Simply rub the inner and outer guides with the paraffin until the drawer slides smoothly.

  • Carpet Stains - if your carpet is stained by any finish residue from the feet/legs of cases, we recommend cleaning the stain with Naptha, which can be found at most paint and home improvement stores.  Be sure to follow the instructions on the package carefully.
